Archer on Horseback in South Korea

Archer on Horseback in South Korea
Spread the love

Living in South Korea I was able to experience the incredible beauty, pageantry and skill of mounted archers as they rode toward their targets and made their shots.  The horses were magnificent with steady strides taking their riders past the mark and waiting for the thud of the arrow hitting the target as they rode on to the next target down the track.  Going to a Mounted Archer Competition was one of the highlights of my life there.

I really enjoyed watching the riders and horses in competition.  This was one of the best events during my stay in South Korea.  Horseback archery is very popular in South Korea and is a beloved sport.  Archery alone requires great skill but on horseback it is something much grander, harking back to centuries ago when mounted archers defended kingdoms and nations with aspects of martial arts and the heroics of warriors in their background.

Competitive mounted archers have several different disciplines in competition including single shots to the side while riding on a 90 meter track, serial shots to multiple targets, moving targets as well as team events.   It’s a great sport and celebrated as such in South Korea with high honors for the very best archers.

If you go to Korea, see if you can find an archery practice or competition while you are there.  You won’t be disappointed.  It is a true national sport and representative of South Korean culture and is of historical significance as well.
