Staying young is all about having a youthful outlook no matter what your age. If you feel young inside, your life will be rewarding and fulfilled. Being young at heart is all about having wonder in your life and a vital spark that shows in your eyes. Exploring your world is an important part of staying young. Don’t sit on the couch. Get outside and explore your neighborhood or plan a weekend get away. It will keep you young.
In the photograph above, I went into the desert at White Sands National Monument. I took my camera, my tripod and a compass as well as a little water and a snack. That’s it. Nothing elaborate except for the glorious location. Some might think “it’s a desert full of sand dunes” but in fact, with the light on the gypsum sands of these magnificent dunes, they become magical. They take in the light of the sky. The whiteness of the dunes is unique and is due to the fact that they are made of gypsum and not quartz or other minerals. I spent a few hours out there taking photographs as I hiked over the dunes recording their shapes and colors. One of the most beautiful things about the dunes is the wind driven patterns formed on their surface. These lines are perfect as if laid down with a ruler. Nature has a way of creating perfection. The crystals of gypsum also sparkled like diamonds too. They are crunchy as well when you walk on them.
This was my day and my chance to explore. Just an example. During the time alone and afterwards when the sky became dark I felt alive. It’s a great feeling. Wow. I love it. Anyway, this is one idea to help with staying young at heart.
One of the things I love about photography is that you can do it at any age. You can take it from being a child until you can no longer do it. It’s great. I remember when I got a plastic camera as a Christmas gift from the Army Christmas party at Fort Queenscliff in Victoria, Australia. That was my first camera. Then later I managed to get a Kodak Instamatic and of course ever since then it has been a lifelong passion. Along with the camera comes the urge to explore and see what you can find and experience. This is what life is about. Staying young is easy when you have something you like to do. When you explore, you always find a little gem. Like the little gifts that Jem and Scout found hidden in a tree near Boo Radley’s house in the film “To Kill A Mockingbird”.
Seek out new ideas and new worlds and explore with an open mind. Don’t follow others – just break new tracks and look for great views.
